Formerly known as OASIS, the Metadata Research Program was established in 1990 to explore the topics of information selection, searching, filtering, retrieval, and especially adaptive searching using multiple computers and multiple sources in a networked environment.

The Metadata Research Program comprises ongoing work in several research areas, as well as a number of individually funded projects such as the Seamless and Unfamiliar Metadata projects.
