This website attempts to document all the places in America that Emma Goldman gave talks, and all the topics she spoke on, between 1910 and 1916. Goldman's activities are represented as a network of events, each of which can be associated with documents related to those events. Enhancing Encyclopedias with Context

A demonstration of how online encyclopedia articles can be enhanced with links to contextually relevant resources. References to people and places are automatically detected and links to resources with potentially relevant background information are presented. References can be interactively disambiguated to improve the precision of these links. Part of the Bringing Lives to Light: Biography in Context project.

Enhancing Scanned Texts with Context

A demonstration of how scanned texts can be enhanced with links to contextually relevant resources. Using the output of an optical character recognition (OCR) process, line and word locations can be determined, allowing interactive selection and highlighting of references to people and places. These references can be detected automatically or manually added as annotations. Part of the Contexts and Relationships: Ireland and Irish Studies project.

Congressional Biographies

A demonstration of how biographical information can be extracted and displayed in a geotemporal browser. The KML file, when loaded into Google Earth, shows the birthplace and (and applicable) death place for all of the members of the U.S. Congress since the first Congress in 1789. Panning and zooming the Google earth interface, and adjusting the time bar submits searches finding related Congresspersons. Part of the Bringing Lives to Light: Biography in Context project.

Historical Irish Statistical Data

A demonstration of how historical statistical information can be extracted and displayed in a geotemporal browser. The KML files, when loaded into Google Earth, show the Irish Barony or Poor Law Union outlines and population for the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 census. Tilting the view will allow you to see the population data as a histogram bar at the center of the Barony or PLU. Part of the Contexts and Relationships: Ireland and Irish Studies project.
